Well, not really. Just the online part. Right now, the editorial staff is focused on putting out a top-notch, high-quality newspaper for your enjoyment, and doesn't have time for dalliances in this whole "Web 2.0" thing. Neither should you. Instead, you should be volunteering for Over the Edge. Just e-mail over-the-edge@unbc.ca, or drop by the office (in the Wintergarden for now, but soon to be in the new NUSC building), to find out how.

In the meantime, you can explore the old stories on this site, and you can check out even older ones here and here.

Free Music All Day

If you want to see what all the fuss is about with Meow Records (which just made the cut for the top 5 record stores and is now competing for number one), that head down this Saturday for International Record Store day. You'll get to see some of the best music PG has to offer, and if they win the vote the concerts will be broadcast on CBC Radio 3.

Meow Makes the Top 10

The results for the final ten in the Record Store Searchlight have been announced, and Prince George's Meow Records is still standing. This is a major coup for the city, given that Prince George is the only place on the list that isn't a provincial or national capital. Voting for the Top 5 goes until April 13, and from then until the 17 there will be a showdown for the best store in Canada. The winning store gets a live broadcast with their favourite local band.

The CBC's list of top record stores in Canada is out, and Prince George's own Meow Records has made the top 20.

Get Your Senate Vote On

This has been a surprisingly strong year for UNBC student politics, and with the Senate elections coming up on April 3 and 4, there seems to be no signs of slowing down.

Traditionally, interest in the Senate has remained scant, with seats continuously remaining vacant. This week, however, eight applicants are vying for the six undergrad positions, thus forcing a rare general election.

The Senate, part of the governing body of UNBC, decides on the future of academic programs, Co-Op, and admissions policies, to name a few. Student senators voice concerns on behalf of the student body and make recommendations.

One of the recommendations Christina Bock, a Senate hopeful, wants to make is for the university to improve international admissions policies. Devan Tasa, who is seeking re-election, hopes to increase interaction between student politicians.

With a record turn-out for the NUGSS elections this year, the candidates are hoping the Senate election will spurr similiar interest.

Voting will take place in the WIntergarden over the next two days, and a list of the candidates wanting your vote are posted below.

Rita's first book, monkeypuzzle, was published by Press Gang in 1998 and received the Asian Canadian Writer’s Workshop Emerging Writer Award. She lives in Miami and Vancouver and teaches Critical and Cultural Studies at the Emily Carr Institute. She has published prose works and poems in Shift and Switch: New Canadian Poetry (Mercury 2006). Companions and Horizons: an Anthology of SFU Poetry (West Coast Line 2005), Ribsauce: a CD/Anthology of Words by Women (Véhicule 2001), The Common Sky: Canadian Writers Against the War (Three Squares 2003), and Swallowing Clouds: An Anthology of Chinese-Canadian Poetry (Arsenal Pulp 1999). Her newest book is Forage from Nightwood Editions has been shortlisted for the 2008 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize along with Prince George's own Gillian Wigmore.

Make Meow Records the Best in Canada

CBC Radio 3 is currently holding a contest to find the best record store in Canada. After the initial round of voting, Meow Records, owned by CFUR alumni Bryndis Ogmundson, is in the running for the top 20-- and ultimately the top spot.

This is where you come in. The winning store will have a live CBC broadcast featuring their favourite local artist. We have a hell of a music scene here in PG, and this would be a great way to get some national exposure. Not to mention the fact that Meow Records makes a huge contribution to the community, from releasing local albums to sponsoring music festivals to starting a Rollergirls league.

So head over to radio3.cbc.ca and vote-- once a day, every day. It's the right thing to do.

Cartoons Get Political in Japan

So over in Japan they've named Doraemon-- the cat-like robot from the future with a fourth-dimensional pocket on his tummy-- an anime ambassador. This is hot on the heels of Astroboy's appointment as an ambassador for overseas safety.

So where's Canada's stance on all this? After all, there's a lot of animation done in this country of ours-- when are we going to get our own cartoon ambasador(s)? And who should it be? May I humbly suggest the Raccoons?

Cuts to UNBC

Instead of the $2.5 million increase UNBC expected from the provincial government for next year, UNBC will be getting a million dollars less. Instead, more government funding is going towards trade schools and colleges for more skilled labourers and nurses in the province.

But for UNBC, the increased spread of funding around the province means less graduate seats for next year and more program cuts. Administration is currently reviewing the finances for next year, and more budget cuts are coming.

There hasn't been any activity on the blog for a couple of days, which I know makes you all sad, so I thought I'd direct your attention to the opinions section where I just wrote a piece on everything going on in Tibet and with the Olympics. I'd love to get some feedback on this, as there's always room for interesting discussion when it comes to China, the Olympics, Tibet, and human rights. So what's your opinion? Should the Olympics be boycotted? Or would this be unfair to athletes? Or what?

Nuclear Activity at UNBC

This week is a champion week for student activism, with Green Day and Nuclear Awareness events being hosted on campus.

Today and tomorrow, United Nations interns will be promoting nuclear awareness with discussion featuring nuclear poltics and international security. These interns hope to promote nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, in accordance with UN goals.

They will be available on campus from 9-3 pm on both days.

We have coverage of concerts and poetry readings from around town, commentary on the NUGSS election results, analysis of the UNBC basketball scene, praise for Fidel Castro and boos for record companies. Oh, and more information about rollergirls, coming to a northern community near you.

Tomorrow morning we will be giving muffins away to the first twenty or so people to visit our booth, set up in halls near the Wintergarden. Hopefully you'll give us some feedback, and even if you don't-- hey, it's a free muffin.

Event Reminder: Facebook in the Classroom

Just a reminder that tomorrow afternoon, Dr. Heather Smith will be giving a presentation on everyone's favourite social networking site, Facebook. As she describes it:

“This term I decided to set up a Facebook page for my International Studies class. I had never done this before and so like any new activity in our classroom, it was a bit of a risk. I know that colleagues at other universities had used Facebook in their classes, but would it work’ for me and my students? In this seminar I will look at the issues faced in any class by bringing in ‘something’ new, will consider the student feedback from my class, and will engage participants in a brainstorming exercise on the value of taking these kinds of risks.”

Poet Fred Wah Readings

Prominent Canadian poet Fred Wah is visiting town tomorrow (Tuesday March 11), giving presentations at UNBC and CNC. Wah, whose ancestry includes Chinese, Irish, Swedish, and Scottish, has dealt extensively with the themes of language and identity in a Canadian context.

He will be at UNBC in room 5-155 at 1:00 pm and CNC in room 1-309 at 7:00 pm.

Pox Eclipse LIVE on the Internet

Fresh off of their appearance at Over the Edge presents, Pox Eclipse will be performing live on CFUR tonight as the debut act in "So Late It's Early"'s "Still Electric"series. According show host and Pox Eclipse member Cal Hilde, the show "will feature members of the band performing songs, talking about music and playing some of their favorite bands."

Concert Alert: Jezebel's Jam

It's International Woman's Day tomorrow, and the celebrations are kicking off early with Jezebel's Jam, a semi-annual event celebrating women in the artistic community. This year's theme is Divas and Alter Egos and will contain belly dances, poetry, an art auction, and performances by Montage, ccHamel, Jeremy Stewart, and Erin Arding and the 60 Hz Hum. Advnace tickets are available from the Women's Centre and Books & Co. for $10, or at the door for $15. The event is at the Art Space at 8, doors at 7.

Also, don't forget about that other Woman's Day event, the visit from the Lt. Governor of Nova Scotia.

Honoring Indigenous Women

You can read about the speeches here, and you can read the candidates’ platforms in the latest issue of Over the Edge. There’s also a vote on the U-Pass, which would see a semester fee increase in exchange for free buses and swimming at the Aquatic Centre. You can read the arguments for and against this idea at the booths set up in the halls near the library. We highly encourage you to get informed and make your choice—after all, if we can’t get democracy to work in a university, then what hope do entire countries have?

NUGSS Candidates Go Toe-to-Toe One Day Before Elections

NUGSS candidates presented their platforms this afternoon to a large Wintergarden crowd in preparation for the March 5th-6th voting period.

Speaking like a winner, sole presidential candidate Cameron Ehl promised "continued devotion to the student body," and celebrations for the capstone NUSC project for the year to come.

VP Social candidates James De Vuyst and Nikki Lunoch promised more NUGSS presence on campus. De Vuyst's 3 principals: promotion, campus culture, and innovation were supplemented by his desire to create a biweekly concert series on campus next year. Lunoch stressed the promotion of multiculturalism and quirky events like Santa Claus Olympics.

Speeches heated up when the moneymen, Gavin Chung and Nolan Clark, took to the podium to campaign for VP Finance. Question period, lasting a lengthy 14 minutes, brought out topics like increasing student accessibility to NUGSS financial statements, possibly revising the tiered NUGSS club system, and questioning the NUGSS/Over-the-Edge relationship. Chung would like to increase cooperation between the two autonomous organizations in order to increase student body interest, whereas Clark sees the NUGSS/Over-the-Edge relationship fine as is.

Troy Dickson, Shazad Shah, and Devan Tasa fought for VP Student Affairs, with Dickson citing time spent as a Resident Assistant an asset and Tasa touting his extensive knowledge of NUGSS policy. Carly Aronetz and Elmslie Elyse vied for VP External, while Meghan Toews and Tamara Morrison campaigned for First Nations Rep.

The heavy-duty question of the day, however, was posited at the VP Finance candidates: who would Chuck Norris endorse in a campaign race? The self-proclaimed "Asian invasion" Chung or the self-titled "Serious" Clark?

The answer will be decided with the conclusion of your voting on Thursday evening and the subsequent posting of results by student media.

What Is Canada For?

Yesterday, Dr. Michael Byers visited UNBC to talk about the thesis of his new book; namely that Canada is an independent nation, despite the predictions made by George Grant forty-three years ago. One of his central arguments was that there's more to nationhood that economic control, ergo economic dependency on the United States doesn't immediately lead to joining the United States. He cited the Liberal decisions not to join the Iraq War or the North American missile defence system as examples of Canadian sovereignty. He also criticized current PM Stephen Harper for not showing enough independence on foreign policy, particularly on the environment and in military operations.

A UNBC/Emily Carr poetry and art event was held at the Two Rivers Art Gallery Saturday March 1, in hopes of promoting the new Fine Arts Program.
The event had UNBC/Emily Carr professor Sheila Hall give a presentation on various artistic projects she's been a part of across the globe, in addition to Budde's poetry reading and appetizers.
"The North has wanted this for so so long… Prince George and Northerners can stay in their own latitude and explore their artistic statements," UNBC English masters student and co-organizer of the event Jeremy Stewart said during the event's introduction.

Record-Breaking Snowfall

You may have noticed that it's somewhat snowy outside today. Well, according to Environment Canada meteorologist, we received between 25-30 cm, a new record for single-day snowfall in March. The old record was 19.8 cm.

1. Over the Edge, as a physical newspaper, is not dead. We will continue to publish every two weeks, so you'll still have something to read.

2. You can comment on anything posted here. You've heard about web 2.0? This is it. You don't have to create an account in order to do this, though we do encourage you to identify yourself in some way, so we can recognize members of our online community.

3. We'll be using this site-- the one you're looking at now-- to give you quick, easy to read updates about what's going on at Over the Edge, UNBC, and the world, and to encourage discussion. The links above-- "News" "Arts" "Sports" and so on-- will be where we post content from the paper itself, sometimes before the paper is published.

PUBLICATION SCHEDULE

Over the Edge is a volunteer-run organization open to all UNBC students. We also welcome outside contributors. If you are interested in becoming a staff member, a writer, a photographer, or a columnist, it's as simple as coming by the Over the Edge office located across from the Wintergarden and letting us know. We'll tell you what's available and how everything works. The other sites are going to be exactly what they say: news will be news, arts will be arts, the guide will be reviews of everything, and the bands page will be a listing of bands in Prince George and area.
